More Camp Eva of Mountaindale

I just couldn't resist putting up one more Camp Eva message becuase you were always such a loyal crowd. Here's a note from April 2003 from those local camp sweethearts, Judy & Gary Knee

Anyone out their from Camp Eva? We have fond memories, including a Camp marriage of 40 years. It was 1955 that Gary Knee and Judy Rubin met. Barbara (Rubin) Gass is my sister. Names sound familiar? We are here living near Monticello and would love to hear from you. We have seen Judy Rothschild, her dad Manny was head counselor; Harriet Weissman, Stan Weissman, Jerry Friefeld. Aunt Arline (Saltman) and Uncle Aaron Berezowsky are also excited about this site. Jackie Saltman is her brother. So sign in and say hello.... There was nothing like Camp Eva. Does anyone remember my Grandmother, Pauline Berezowsky. She was the best children's waitress and also worked in the Main Dining room for the adults? I know you will be thrilled to hear these names as we are. So folks let's hear from you!

  2. I also remember Bobbi Rubin. I attended Camp Eva in 1959, 1960 and 1961. I was Bryna "Levitt" ,tall with a pony tail. I remember being the pitcher in several softball games, playing badminton, archery, swimming, horseback riding and the Friday night socials. We were in G-3 and the boys were in B-4. Howie, very cute with blondish brown hair used to ask me to dance at the socials. I won either a trophy for "All Around Camper" or "All Around Service" in 1960. Joel Risch? handed the trophy to me and and said, "Congratulations!"My bunkmates pooled their canteen money the next day to make a party for me at lunch. I, UNFORTUNATELY, felt like I was going to pass out from the heat, so I went back to the bunk and didn't eat lunch. After lunch, my bunkmates burst into the bunk with frozen 3 Museketeer bars and other goodies, screaming, "Surprise!!!" They had planned to give me a surprise party in the dining room but of all times, I wasn't there. So many wonderful memories, color war-the green and gold, Dave-older man with glasses, archery, plays, swimming, horseback riding, seeing Eva, the founder of the camp walking on the grounds, Reville, the grass so wet with the morning dew, Taps, and the lowering of the flag, playing with a salamander on my pillow during rest time, Pick-up sticks, marbles, paddleball.....If anyone remembers me or can relate to these incredibly wonderful memories, please e-mail me at bryaapl@gmail.com.

    1. Hi Eileen:
Just to make sure, was it you that said Sid Bernstein (Beatles promoter) was you uncle and was it you that spread a rumor that a famous British band would appear at camp and then dressed up with a few bunk-mates and "pretended" to be the Rolling Stones and performed in the Rec Hall ?

  6. I was at Camp Eva when I was very young, maybe 5 and/or 6 years old. That would have been 1960 or 61, possibly for a few years. Eva was my Great Aunt.My brother, Morris Balamut, 3 years older than me, apparently had a reputation as a troublemaker. I understand that he set some extra mattresses on fire using a magnifying glass in the sun and the whole camp had to be evacuated. My cousin, Harvey Goodstein, was a waiter, and his brother, Gerry, was the play director. I remember we did the King and I. I also remember that he ran a talent show and a bunkmate, Stephanie Bollan (spelling?), sang "If I Had a Hammer." There was a really cute counselor named Marty Asher who used to play guitar and sing folk songs with us.Anybody out there remember any of these things? Does anybody know when the camp closed or why? I remember loving being in the mountains and I certainly owe my ability to swim to Camp Eva.

  8. Hi Judy!
I went to Camp Eva in 1959, 1960 and 1961. I remember a head counselor, Joel ???Reisch, I remember Eva, Friday night socials, (I was in G3 with B4. Howie Golden, (he was so handsome, he would ask me to dance) A former bunkmate,, Ellen Bittman, currently lives in my building. She is still friendly with Maxine Schreiber, (also a great bunkmate but Ellen hasn't gotten us together yet). Maybe your brother was in a similar age bunk but unfortunately, his name doesn't sound familiar. I won the "All Around Service" trophy in 1960.
